You already have a master's degree. You have a job, maybe a family, and a career you have worked hard for. And somewhere in the back of your mind, there is a question: could I still earn a doctorate?
For a lot of working professionals, the honest answer is yes. A growing number of US universities now offer hybrid PhD, DBA and EdD programs. Most of the learning happens online, with short visits to campus, often about once a semester. You keep working while you study.
This guide explains how these programs work, what they cost, and how to pick the right one. If you want to compare every option side by side, open our free US Doctorate Guide, which lists 59 programs at 21 universities.
What "hybrid" really means
A hybrid doctorate mixes two things:
- Online coursework you complete around your work schedule.
- On-campus residencies, usually short visits each term, where you meet faculty and your cohort in person.
The exact pattern is different at every university. Some ask you to visit once a semester. Others run a few weekends a year. Always confirm the schedule before you apply, especially if you will be travelling from another city or country.
PhD, DBA or EdD: which one fits you?
- PhD (Doctor of Philosophy): research focused. Good if you want to publish, teach at university level, or become a subject expert. Hybrid options include Leadership, Accounting, Business, Information Technology, Cyber Technology Management and Healthcare Management.
- DBA (Doctor of Business Administration): practice focused. You apply research to real business problems. Popular concentrations include Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Healthcare Administration, Strategic Management and Project Management.
- EdD (Doctor of Education): for teachers, trainers and education leaders who want to lead schools, colleges or learning programs.
How much does a US hybrid doctorate cost?
Costs vary a lot. Based on the programs in our guide, estimated total tuition ranges from about $24,000 to $81,000. A few examples:
| University | Program | Credits | Estimated total tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midwest University | DBA (Health Care Management, AI & Digital Transformation) | 60 | about $24,000 |
| Anderson University | DBA in Artificial Intelligence | 48 | about $28,000 |
| Belhaven University | DBA (four concentrations) | 60 | about $35,700 |
| Campbellsville University | PhD in Leadership, Accounting, Healthcare Management | 60 | about $43,200 |
| University of the Cumberlands | PhD in Leadership, Business, Information Technology | 60 | about $44,940 |
These are estimates as of November 2026 and do not include living costs, travel for residencies, books or fees. Prices change, so we always confirm the latest numbers with the university before you apply.
Who can apply?
Requirements differ by university, but most hybrid doctoral programs look for:
- A completed master's degree (some accept a non-business master's for a DBA, sometimes with a foundation course)
- Transcripts from your previous degrees
- An updated resume showing your work experience
- Letters of recommendation, often two or three
- A statement of purpose or personal essay
- An interview with the program team
Many of these programs do not require the GRE or GMAT, but check each one.
A note for international students
If you are an international student, ask three questions before you choose a program:
- Does the program issue an I-20 for F-1 status?
- How often must you be on campus, and is that compatible with your visa and work plans?
- What does the university say about CPT (work authorization during study), and from which semester?
US student visa rules have been changing in 2026. For example, a rule that would replace "duration of status" with fixed admission periods was finalized in July 2026 and then blocked by a federal court in September, and the case is still under appeal. Always check the current rules with the university's international student office (DSO) or an immigration attorney before you decide.
How to choose the right program in 4 steps
- Start with your goal. Teaching and research point to a PhD. Leading a business points to a DBA. Leading in education points to an EdD.
- Check the format. How often are campus visits, and where is the campus?
- Compare the full cost. Look at the total tuition, not just the cost per credit, and add travel for residencies.
- Talk to someone who has done this before. A short call can save you months of research.
